Choosing a testing company

A list of the main DNA testing companies is provided in Appendix B. Only two of these companies, Family Tree DNA and Ancestry.com, currently provide project management tools and an easy-to-use facility to create your own DNA project website. The websites do not require any specialist expertise and can easily be compiled and updated by anyone who has basic word-processing skills. If you are prepared to set up your own DNA project website then in theory any company can be used, but this will require a lot more effort and technical knowledge. In some cases the choice of company will be dictated by the surnames that are already represented in the company’s database. It is thus a good idea, as a first step, to check the two company databases to see if anyone else with your surname has already been tested. Even if there is no project for the surname people might have tested instead with a geographical project or simply ordered a test out of curiosity. The company will usually happily contact the testers on your behalf and encourage them to join your project. Alternatively, you might find that the results have been uploaded into one of the public Y-DNA databases and you will be able to contact the candidates yourself. Note that the public listings in the Family Tree DNA database will only give an indication of the number of people with the surname in the database. Some of these testers could be females who have taken an mtDNA test or an autosomal DNA test.
